SWP Calculation Formulas

Basic SWP Formula
Remaining Corpus = (Previous Corpus × (1 + r)) - SWP Amount

Where:

r = Periodic interest rate (annual rate ÷ number of periods per year)

SWP Amount = Fixed withdrawal amount per period

Corpus Depletion Formula
n = ln(1 - (P × r)/SWP) ÷ ln(1 + r)

Where:

n = Number of periods until depletion

P = Initial principal amount

r = Periodic interest rate

SWP = Withdrawal amount per period

ln = Natural logarithm

Practical Examples

Retirement Income
Scenario:
  • Initial investment: ₹50,00,000
  • Monthly withdrawal: ₹25,000
  • Expected annual return: 7.5%
  • Withdrawal frequency: Monthly
Calculation:
Monthly rate = 7.5% ÷ 12 = 0.625% = 0.00625

n = ln(1 - (50,00,000 × 0.00625)/25,000) ÷ ln(1 + 0.00625)
n = ln(1 - 1.25) ÷ ln(1.00625)
n = ln(-0.25) ÷ ln(1.00625) → Not possible (negative logarithm)
Result:
The corpus will continue growing indefinitely at this withdrawal rate.
Education Funding
Scenario:
  • Initial investment: ₹15,00,000
  • Quarterly withdrawal: ₹1,00,000
  • Expected annual return: 8%
  • Withdrawal frequency: Quarterly
Calculation:
Quarterly rate = 8% ÷ 4 = 2% = 0.02

n = ln(1 - (15,00,000 × 0.02)/1,00,000) ÷ ln(1 + 0.02)
n = ln(1 - 0.3) ÷ ln(1.02)
n = ln(0.7) ÷ ln(1.02)
n = -0.356675 ÷ 0.019803 = -18.01
Absolute value = 18 quarters = 4.5 years
Result:
The corpus will last for approximately 4.5 years (18 quarters).
